Aaron: (joins in) hooonnk.

Aaron: Hoonnk.

Dad: Right.

Dad: The paddle boat goes … chum-splish, chum-splash, chum-splish. Toot, toot.

Aaron: Toot, toot.

Aaron: (very quietly) Chum-splish.

Dad: The speed boat goes … grrr, vrooommm, mmmm.

Aaron: Vrmm.

Dad: The sail boat goes sshhhh, clang, clang, flap, flap, flap. Sshhhh.

Aaron: Eeeeyeey

Dad: The submarine goes BING, hmmm.

Aaron: ging.

Dad: Bing, hmmmm.

Aaron: ging.

Dad: Bing, hmmmm.

Aaron: ging … hmmm.

Dad: The gondola goes (quietly) O sole mio. (louder, and singing) O sole mio. What do you think?

Aaron tries to say something.

Dad: Yeah, it’s a gondola.

Aaron: Gondola.

Dad: Yeah, there’s a person up there who’s doing what they call punting. Yeah.

Aaron: Choo, choo.

Dad: Yeah, it doesn’t make beeps. It just kind of pushes it. Through channels and stuff. Hmm, hmm.

Reading books is an important way a caregiver can support the development of a young child’s language and literacy during the infant-toddler years. As children grow, they become more attentive and able to participate in book sharing. In this video, we watch 20-month-old Aaron and his dad share a favorite book that includes fun sounds from different kinds of boats. Notice as Aaron repeats the sounds that the boats make and he and his dad talk about all the different boats shown by the pictures in the book.
